Class 10 Maths: High-Scoring Chapters and Common Mistakes

Class 10 Maths is one of the most scoring subjects in the board exam, and also one where students lose marks in the most predictable ways. Knowing where the marks come from, and where they usually go, helps a student use the remaining months well.

Unit-wise weightage

The theory paper is of 80 marks, with 20 marks of internal assessment. Recent CBSE syllabus documents distribute the 80 marks roughly as follows (always confirm with the syllabus for your exam year):

• Algebra (Polynomials, Pair of Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions) - about 20 marks
• Geometry (Triangles, Circles) - about 15 marks
• Trigonometry (Introduction to Trigonometry, Applications) - about 12 marks
• Statistics and Probability - about 11 marks
• Mensuration (Areas Related to Circles, Surface Areas and Volumes) - about 10 marks
• Number Systems (Real Numbers) - about 6 marks
• Coordinate Geometry - about 6 marks

Chapters that give the best return

Algebra

The largest unit, and very scoring once the methods are clear. Quadratic Equations and Arithmetic Progressions follow fixed patterns. Students who practise the NCERT exercises and examples thoroughly usually score well here.

Statistics and Probability

Mean, median and mode of grouped data are formula-based and predictable. Probability questions are short but need careful reading. Together they are among the easiest marks in the paper.

Trigonometry

Once the identities and standard values are memorised, trigonometric identities and heights-and-distances questions become routine. Draw the figure for every heights-and-distances question.

Coordinate Geometry and Real Numbers

Short chapters with a limited number of question types. Distance and section formula questions are almost guaranteed marks with practice.

The most common mistakes

• Skipping steps. Board marking gives step marks. A correct answer with no working can lose marks; a wrong final answer with correct steps can still earn most of them.
• Sign errors while shifting terms in algebra and while solving quadratic equations.
• Forgetting units in Mensuration answers - cm, cm squared and cm cubed are not interchangeable.
• Using the wrong value of pi - use the value asked in the question, 22/7 or 3.14.
• Not writing "Given, To prove, Construction, Proof" in geometry theorems.
• Misreading the question - for example, finding the sum of an AP when the question asks for a specific term.
• Not checking the discriminant before discussing the nature of roots.
• Poor time management, leaving long-answer or case-based questions for the last few minutes.

How to practise

1. Finish every NCERT exercise and example first. They are the core of the board paper.
2. Keep a formula sheet - one page for the whole subject - and revise it daily from December.
3. Solve official CBSE sample papers in three hours and check them against the marking scheme.
4. Maintain a mistakes notebook and read it before every test.
