How to Balance Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 10 Science

Class 10 Science is one paper, but it contains three very different subjects. Physics needs numericals and ray diagrams, Chemistry needs balanced equations and reactions, and Biology needs clear explanations and labelled diagrams. Most students like one of these and avoid another - and the avoided part is usually where the marks are lost.

How the marks are spread

The theory paper is of 80 marks, with 20 marks of internal assessment. Recent CBSE syllabus documents divide the theory marks by unit roughly as follows (confirm with the syllabus for your exam year):

• Chemical Substances - Nature and Behaviour (Chemistry): about 25 marks
• World of Living (Biology): about 25 marks
• Natural Phenomena (Light and the Human Eye - Physics): about 12 marks
• Effects of Current (Electricity and Magnetism - Physics): about 13 marks
• Natural Resources (Our Environment): about 5 marks

In other words, Physics, Chemistry and Biology each carry roughly a third of the paper. No part can be skipped.

How to study each part

Physics: practise, do not just read

• Solve numericals on Electricity regularly - series and parallel combinations and power calculations appear every year.
• Draw ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses until they become automatic, with arrows and labels.
• Keep all formulas and sign conventions on one page.

Chemistry: equations and reasons

• Write and balance chemical equations daily, not just read them.
• Learn the reason behind each property - why metals react as they do, why carbon forms so many compounds.
• Make a chart of acids, bases and salts with examples and uses.

Biology: explanation and diagrams

• Practise writing answers in clear steps, using the terms used in NCERT.
• Draw and label the important diagrams - the human digestive system, heart, nephron, neuron, and the reproductive structures in the syllabus.
• Revise with flowcharts for processes like respiration and nutrition.

A simple weekly plan

Split Science study time across the week so that no part is left for later:

• Two sessions of Physics numericals and diagrams
• Two sessions of Chemistry equations and concepts
• Two sessions of Biology answers and diagrams
• One session of mixed revision or a short test across all three

Give a little extra time to the part you find hardest - but never drop the others completely.

Common mistakes

• Studying only the favourite part and hoping the others go well.
• Reading Chemistry equations instead of writing and balancing them.
• Drawing diagrams without labels, or with arrows missing in ray diagrams.
• Writing long Biology answers without the key terms examiners look for.
• Forgetting units in Physics numericals.
