Class 12 Accountancy: Common Mistakes That Cost Students Marks

ByESA Editorial·Last reviewed ·7 min read

Class 12 Accountancy can give students near-full marks, because most questions have a single correct answer. That same precision is why marks disappear so easily: one wrong ratio or one missed adjustment can spoil an entire question. These are the mistakes we see most often in our Commerce batches in Rohini.

Partnership accounts

Confusing sacrificing and gaining ratios

On admission of a partner, old partners sacrifice; on retirement or death, the continuing partners gain. Using the wrong ratio for goodwill adjustment is one of the most common errors. Always write the ratio calculation as a working note.

Ignoring what applies when the partnership deed is silent

When the deed is silent, the provisions of the Partnership Act apply - for example, profits are shared equally, no interest on capital or salary is allowed, and interest on a partner's loan is allowed at a fixed rate. Many students add interest on capital by habit and lose marks.

Wrong sides in the Revaluation Account

An increase in an asset or a decrease in a liability is a gain and goes on the credit side. Students frequently reverse this under exam pressure. Make a quick two-line check before posting each item.

Goodwill calculation errors

Read carefully whether the question asks for average profit, super profit or capitalisation method, and whether the number of years' purchase applies to average or super profit.

Company accounts

Forfeiture and reissue of shares

Share Forfeiture is credited only with the amount already received towards share capital on the forfeited shares - not with any premium. On reissue, only the balance left after covering the loss on reissue is transferred to Capital Reserve. Transferring the whole forfeiture amount is a common error.

Securities premium handling

Track when the premium is called and received. If the premium has already been received before forfeiture, it is not debited to Securities Premium at the time of forfeiture.

Issue of debentures

Remember how loss on issue of debentures is written off, and do not forget to record interest on debentures where the question asks for it.

Analysis of financial statements

Cash flow statement classification

For a non-financial company, interest and dividend paid are financing activities, while interest and dividend received are investing activities. Students regularly put them in operating activities. Also remember to add back non-cash items like depreciation and adjust for profit or loss on sale of fixed assets.

Ratio formula errors

Know exactly what is included in current assets, quick assets and total debts. For example, inventory and prepaid expenses are excluded from quick assets. A wrong numerator makes the whole ratio wrong.

Presentation mistakes

  • No working notes. Working notes carry marks and show the examiner your method even if the final figure is wrong.
  • Missing narrations in journal entries.
  • Unbalanced accounts left without checking. If an account does not balance, recheck quickly - there is usually one missed adjustment.
  • Messy formats. Use the prescribed format for the balance sheet, notes to accounts and cash flow statement.

How to practise Accountancy

  1. Solve every illustration and exercise from the prescribed textbook - most board questions follow those patterns.
  2. Practise at least one full question from each major topic every week.
  3. Solve official CBSE sample papers and compare your working with the marking scheme.
  4. Keep a mistakes notebook with the correct entry beside each error.

How ESA teaches Commerce

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common mistake in Class 12 partnership accounts?

Confusing the sacrificing ratio with the gaining ratio when adjusting goodwill, and adding interest on capital when the partnership deed is silent, are two of the most common mistakes.

Where should interest paid go in a cash flow statement?

For a non-financial company, interest paid is a financing activity and interest received is an investing activity. Placing them under operating activities is a frequent error.

Do working notes carry marks in Class 12 Accountancy?

Yes. Working notes are often awarded marks in the marking scheme and show the examiner your method, which can earn step marks even if the final figure is wrong.
