Science, Commerce or Humanities: How to Choose a Stream After Class 10

Every year, thousands of Class 10 students choose between Science, Commerce and Humanities, often in a hurry and often under pressure from relatives, friends or the marks they happened to get. The stream affects the next two years of study and many later options, so it is worth choosing carefully. This guide gives a practical way to decide.

Start with the student, not the stream

Before comparing streams, answer three questions honestly:

1. Which subjects does the student enjoy and study willingly, even without being told?
2. Which subjects does the student do well in consistently, across Classes 9 and 10, not just in one exam?
3. What kind of work interests the student - solving problems, working with numbers and business, understanding people and society, creating, or something else?

A stream chosen only because "everyone good takes Science" often leads to two difficult years.

Science

Science usually has two main combinations: PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) and PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), with some schools allowing PCMB. It suits students who enjoy Maths or Biology and are comfortable with a heavy, concept-driven workload.

• Good fit if: the student likes problem solving, experiments and reasoning, and has done well in Class 10 Maths and Science.
• Paths it keeps open: engineering, medicine and allied health, pure sciences, architecture, and many others. Science students can also move to Commerce or Humanities later for college.
• Be realistic about: the workload. Class 11 Physics and Maths are a big step up from Class 10.

Commerce

Commerce typically includes Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics, with Mathematics or Applied Mathematics as an option in many schools.

• Good fit if: the student is comfortable with numbers, interested in business, money and how organisations work.
• Paths it keeps open: chartered accountancy, company secretaryship, finance, management, economics, banking and business.
• Be realistic about: Accountancy needs regular practice. It is not a subject that can be crammed at the end.

Humanities

Humanities (Arts) can include History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Sociology and more, depending on the school.

• Good fit if: the student enjoys reading, writing, discussion and understanding society, people and ideas.
• Paths it keeps open: law, civil services, journalism, psychology, design, teaching, social work and research, among many others.
• Be realistic about: Humanities demands a lot of reading and good written expression. It is not an "easy" stream.

An important rule: Maths Standard vs Basic

In CBSE Class 10, students choose between Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic. Under CBSE's rules, students who take Maths Basic in Class 10 are generally not allowed to take core Mathematics in Class 11 - they can opt for Applied Mathematics instead. If a student is even considering PCM, or Commerce with core Maths, make sure they sit the Standard paper. Check your school's and CBSE's current rules before the Class 10 exam registration.

Mistakes to avoid

• Choosing a stream because a best friend chose it.
• Deciding only on one exam's marks rather than two years of performance.
• Assuming one stream is "better" than the others. Each leads to well-respected careers.
• Ignoring the student's own interest in favour of family expectations.

If you are still unsure

Talk to subject teachers who know the student, look at the actual Class 11 textbooks of each stream, and speak to older students who took each stream. A school counsellor or a formal aptitude assessment can also help.
